What does your task list look like right now? Are there a bunch of items that are in red or marked "overdue?"
The truth is, we are more strapped for time than we’ve ever been in the past. We have more to do and often fewer resources with which to do them. Maybe your territory was increased when another sales person left and your company merged your territory with theirs. Or maybe your internal once covered two wholesalers but now covers five. Maybe you’ve been told that instead of covering one channel, you’re now expected to cover three.
Companies are always looking for ways to get more out of their employees. And who can blame them? Their eyes are on their bottom line just like your eyes are on yours.
Audience Bloom Founder and CEO Jason DeMers published an article on Inc.com about why we feel like we don’t have enough time. It gives seven scientific reasons there are not enough hours in the day – from not getting enough sleep to bad attitude to poor time management. But, arguably, the article’s most surprising reason was this: you may be too engrossed in your work.
Wait. What? How can you have too little time to get your work done if you're actually super-focused on getting your work done? DeMers says, "Do you ever look up at the clock and realize several hours have passed without your awareness or acknowledgement?" and goes on to say, "...it certainly isn't a bad thing, [but] it can lead you to feel like you don't have enough time."
In short, while focusing on your work for long periods of time is essentially a good thing, it can suck up hours and leave you short-handed in the time department. This becomes especially important when you are prioritizing your to-do list – you work and focus on the first things first and push items whose deadlines are further out (or non-existent) to the bottom of the list.
